For a college batch, the right trek is one most people can finish, that fits a long weekend or a short break, and that delivers a big view. These are the ones we'd shortlist. Grades, altitudes and seasons are on each trek's page.
Weekend treks (2 days)
- Triund — an overnight camp on the Dhauladhar ridge above McLeodganj; sunset and sunrise from the top.
- Nag Tibba — a short summit near Mussoorie, easy to reach from Delhi.
- Prashar Lake — a lake with a floating island and a pagoda temple.
Three-day treks
- Kheerganga — Parvati valley and hot springs at the top.
- Chopta, Tungnath & Chandrashila — meadows, the highest Shiva temple and a sunrise summit.
- Kareri Lake — a quiet glacial lake in the Dhauladhar.
For a week-long break
- Kedarkantha — the classic winter summit trek, with snow camps.
- Brahmatal — frozen lakes and big Trishul views in winter.
- Har Ki Dun — old wooden villages and a valley of the gods.
Tips for a college trek
- Start training four to six weeks before — stairs, long walks and a few runs.
- Rent rather than buy expensive gear if it's your first trek.
- Carry layers, not one heavy jacket.
- No alcohol on the trail — altitude and alcohol don't mix.
