Kashi — one of the world's oldest living cities

Varanasi

About Varanasi

Varanasi is a living city on the Ganga, where the day begins with sunrise on the ghats and ends with the aarti at Dashashwamedh. Beyond the temples, it is a city of silk weavers, classical musicians and a food culture built on kachori, chaat and paan. Sarnath, where the Buddha gave his first sermon, is a short drive away.

Best time to visit
Best from October
October to March, when the ghats are clear and the weather is cool. During the monsoon (July to September) the Ganga floods, lower ghats submerge and boat rides can pause. April to June is very hot.
How to reach
Varanasi Junction and Banaras (Manduadih) stations have direct trains from Delhi (the fast services take about 8 hrs); Lal Bahadur Shastri Airport is ~25 km away with flights from major metros.
