Leh sits at about 3,500 m, and everything about a trip here follows from that: you arrive, you rest, and only then do you climb higher. What you get in return is a landscape that does not look like anywhere else in India — the Indus valley between bare brown mountains, monasteries on crags at Thiksey and Hemis, the Nubra dunes beyond Khardung La, and Pangong lake changing colour through the day.

- How to reach
- Leh has daily flights from Delhi. The Manali and Srinagar road routes are open only in summer and take two days each, with a night's halt for altitude.
