Orchha sits on the banks of the Betwa river, close to Jhansi and about two hours from Gwalior. It was the capital of the Bundela rulers, founded in the early 16th century, and it still feels like a small medieval town.
What to see
- Raja Mahal and Jahangir Mahal, palaces with carved balconies and domes
- Ram Raja Temple, unusual because Rama is worshipped here as a king
- Chaturbhuj Temple, a large temple on a high platform
- The chhatris, or royal cenotaphs, lined up along the river
Why stay overnight
Day visitors arrive in the middle of the day and leave before the light gets good. The town is at its best early and late: at dawn the cenotaphs are empty, and in the evening the temple aarti fills the streets with sound.
Orchha after the coaches leave is a completely different place.
An evening sound-and-light show is held at the palace complex in season; check current timings. You can also walk to the river at sunset and watch the cenotaphs turn gold.
