Udaipur is a lake city, and the lakes decide the mood of the place. Knowing the month helps you choose between crowds and calm, green and golden.
October to March: the classic season
Days are pleasant and evenings are cool, which makes this the best time for boat rides on Lake Pichola, the City Palace and long walks through the old town. It is also the busiest period, and the wedding season fills hotels, so book early.
March and April: Gangaur
Around the spring festival of Gangaur, women dress in bright clothes and carry idols to the lake shore. Dates follow the Hindu calendar and change each year.
April to June: hot and quiet
Temperatures can go above 40 degrees. Prices fall and the palaces are quiet, so if you have to visit in summer, sightsee early and late and rest indoors at midday.
July to September: the green season
The rains fill the lakes and turn the Aravalli hills green. The city looks its best, though heavy showers can interrupt outdoor plans. The hilltop Monsoon Palace, Sajjangarh, is popular for views over the valley when the weather is clear.
