Bhopal is a good base in the monsoon: the lakes are full, the hills around are green, and several worthwhile places are within a few hours' drive.
Pachmarhi (about 4 to 5 hours)
The Satpura hill station is at its most dramatic during the rains, with waterfalls such as Bee Falls at full flow. Dhoopgarh, the highest point in Madhya Pradesh, is the classic viewpoint. Clouds can hide the view completely, so keep expectations flexible.

- Keep a buffer for slow roads after heavy rain
Wildlife safaris in the Satpura region are usually closed in the monsoon, so plan this trip around scenery and short forest walks instead.
Bhimbetka rock shelters (about an hour)
These are a UNESCO World Heritage site, with painted shelters that go back thousands of years. It is a good half-day option and works well in light rain, though paths get slippery.
