Jim Corbett National Park, set up in 1936, is regarded as India's oldest national park. It sits in the foothills of Uttarakhand, roughly two hours' drive from Nainital, which makes a Nainital and Corbett combination popular.
How safaris work
Visitors enter in jeeps with a park-approved driver and a guide, inside a specific zone. Zones such as Bijrani, Jhirna, Dhikala and Durga Devi have different landscapes and different rules, and entry is limited each day.
When to go
- November to June is the main safari season
- Winter mornings are cold, so wear layers and a windproof jacket
- Summer is hot, but wildlife gathers near water and is easier to spot
- Most of the park closes during the monsoon, roughly July to September or October, and some zones follow different dates
