These are the programs we'd actually point a friend to. None of them pays us, and fees change — always check the official site before you sign up.
Stay free by volunteering
- Workaway — free food and stay in exchange for a few hours of help a day at hostels, farms, NGOs and homestays across India
- Worldpackers — work exchanges at hostels and guesthouses; annual membership (about $49 a year when we checked)
- WWOOF India — organic farm stays; Indian members paid ₹1,125 a year when we checked
Best for: students and gap-year travellers with two weeks or more.
Stay free by looking after a home
- TrustedHousesitters — house and pet sits in Indian cities; annual membership
Stay with locals
- Couchsurfing — free stays with local hosts; full messaging needs a paid verified membership
Fly on points
- Air India Maharaja Club — earn on Air India, Air India Express and Star Alliance flights; redeem for award flights and upgrades
- IndiGo BluChip — IndiGo's loyalty programme, launched in 2024; earn on flights and redeem for IndiGo flights
Best for: people who already fly for work. Don't take a credit card just for points unless you pay it in full every month.
