Bhagoria is a harvest-season festival of the Bhil and Bhilala communities in the western districts of Madhya Pradesh, including areas around Jhabua, Alirajpur, Dhar and Khargone. It is held in the run-up to Holi and takes the form of large, lively village markets.
What you will see
- People in bright traditional dress and silver jewellery
- Drums, flutes and group dances
- Stalls selling food, sweets, ornaments and everyday goods
- Swings and a fair atmosphere
The markets are also linked to a well-known local custom in which young people traditionally chose their partners. Today it is best understood as a community festival and fair.

- Ask before photographing people, especially in close-up
- Dress modestly and be patient with crowds
- Buy directly from artisans rather than bargaining hard
